About Our Grassroots Effort

Preserve Hilltown is made up of residents of Farihill, a small section of rural Hilltown Township (Pennsylvania) centered at the crossroads of Fairhill Road and Keystone Drive.

PennDot has announced the final phase of their plans to connect route 309 to the Kulpsville/Lansdale interchange of the PA Turnpike (Northeast extension). PennDot intends to establish the 309-connector interchange within our quaint, rural neighborhood.  This will create a significant increase in traffic within our area, among other concerns such as:

  1. Safety concerns for residents and their children
  2. Loss of homes and businesses
  3. Decreased property values
  4. Reduced quality of life (e.g., increased noise, pollution, congestion, etc.)

About PennDOT’s 309 Connector Project

PennDOT is in a multi-phase 309 connector project that is intended to connect Sumneytown Pike (just north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s Lansdale Interchange) to PA Route 309.

The project consists of three phases: Phase 1 (“HAT”) (Completed); Phase 2 (“HAT2) (Nearing Completion); and Phase 3 (“HAT3”) which greatly impacts our community:

Phase III (“HT3”) (CURRENTLY IN FINAL DESIGN)

The project will accommodate two 11 foot-wide lanes with 8 foot-wide shoulders from Hatfield/Souderton Pike in Montgomery County to the connection with PA 309. Current design includes:

  • Will follow the existing alignment of Township Line Road between Hatfield/Souderton Pike and Bethlehem Pike
  • The Bethlehem Pike/Township Line Road intersection will be completely reconstructed as left and right turning lanes are necessary to improve traffic flow.
  • The proposed road will continue east past the Bethlehem Pike intersection and will connect to Fairhill Road. The Fairhill Road bridge over PA 309 will be replaced with a wider and higher bridge to accommodate the proposed road and required vertical clearance.
  • A half-diamond interchange will be created with two new ramps. These will allow vehicles traveling on the proposed road to enter PA 309 northbound and allow southbound vehicles on PA 309 to exit.
  • A roundabout will be placed at the intersection of the PA 309 northbound ramp, connector road and Fairhill Road.
  • The project will terminate just east of the ramps and tie into existing Fairhill Road.
  • Spur Road will be a dead-end with a cul-de-sac at the southern end. The northern end will require intersection improvements where it connects to Bethlehem Pike. The intersection will be improved by realigning Spur Road to be perpendicular to Bethlehem Pike.
  • A roundabout will be constructed along Bethlehem Pike and County Line Road (i.e. the current location of Indian Valley Camping Center’s Main Building).
  • The project also includes improvement to the PA 309/Unionville Pike intersection. The roadway will be widened slightly to accommodate double left turns from PA 309 NB onto Unionville Pike. A new traffic signal will be installed along PA 309 and Church Street.
  • The project will also include an intersection improvement on Sumneytown Pike. The recently completed PA Turnpike project has induced heavy congestion at the Old Forty Foot Road/PA 63/PA Turnpike Entrance Ramp. Improvements include widening to add a turn lane to ease congestion in this area.
  • The project will utilize several road closures and traffic detours to construct the project. The PA 113 and Keystone Drive intersection will be utilized for the detour. A traffic signal will be installed at the intersection and will remain after the project is completed.
  • Current Timeline:
    • January 2023: Environmental clearance completed
    • Summer 2023 : Right-of-way acquisition process began
    • 2027 : Construction anticipated to begin
    • 2030 : Construction anticipated to finish.
